Understand the winter sun demand pattern

Winter sun demand is concentrated in three windows: the two weeks either side of Christmas, February half term, and Easter. Prices in these windows sit 40 to 60 percent above their off peak equivalents. Between these peaks, particularly early January and late February to mid March, prices drop sharply.

If you have flexibility in when you travel, the value in mid January is exceptional. The weather in destinations like the Canaries, Egypt and Tenerife is essentially identical to peak weeks, but pricing is often half what it would be over Christmas.

Where winter sun genuinely works

The Canaries are the strongest winter sun destination for UK travellers on grounds of value, flight time and reliability of weather. Egypt offers meaningfully lower prices but comes with longer flights and more limited resort choice. Long haul destinations like Thailand, the Caribbean and Mexico are excellent but priced accordingly.

The Canaries win the value equation for most families. Long haul makes sense for couples and older travellers where the extra flight time is worth the destination premium.

Package versus flight and hotel

Winter sun almost always favours package deals over separately booked flights and hotels. This is because tour operators secure hotel allocations at heavily discounted rates during the shoulder booking season and pass those savings through to package pricing.

The gap is particularly noticeable for family bookings, where package deals often work out 30 to 40 percent cheaper than the equivalent separately booked trip once you factor in transfers and baggage.
